C welterweight champion Robbie Lawler is expected to defend his championship for the third time against American Top Team teammate Tyron Woodley at UFC 201. Following a report from MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani, the news was confirmed on Wednesday's UFC Tonight.
Lawler (27-10, 1 NC) captured the 170-pound belt at the end of 2014 in a highly anticipated rematch against Johny Hendricks. The 34-year old defeated Hendricks by split decision after another exciting five-round main event. Lawler defended his belt for the first time against Rory MacDonald in the co-main event of UFC 189 last summer, finishing him in the fifth round. In his last fight, "Ruthless" picked up a split decision win over Carlos Condit earlier this year.
Woodley (15-3) has been out of action since a January 2015 split decision win over TUF 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum. "The Chosen One" is currently riding a two-fight winning streak, which also includes a devastating knockout over Dong Hyun Kim. Woodley's last loss was to the aforementioned MacDonald by decision in June 2014.
It is unknown at this time whether or not Lawler vs. Woodley will serve as the evening's main event.
UFC 201 takes place live from Atlanta, Georgia on July 30. No other bouts have been made official for the pay-per-view card at this time.
