Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo is refusing to give up the fight in the race for La Liga's 'Pichichi' top scorer award, despite falling four goals behind Barcelona's Luis Suarez. If there is one player in the Real squad who exemplifies the spirit of a competitor, even when the odds are stacked against them, that player is undoubtedly the Portuguese striker.
Whether it be his late goal in El Clasico recently, his return from injury to make the Champions League semi-final tie with Manchester City, or a return to form when some were claiming that his best years were over, Ronaldo has reminded fans this season that he is a player who will fight to the death.
This indomitable spirit will have to be tapped if Ronaldo wants to overtake Suarez to claim the Pichichi award that he has won three times in recent years.
Lionel Messi also has three top scorer trophies in an era dominated by the two legends of the game, although it's his teammate Suarez who leads the chase this year with 35 goals.
Ronaldo has 31 but will be hoping that his return to fitness in time for the final games against Valencia and Deportivo La Coruna will help him steal the prize - named after legendary Athletic Club striker Rafael 'Pichichi' Moreno.
Zinedine Zidane has confirmed that the Portuguese will play against Valencia on Sunday, a boost not only to Ronaldo's hopes of claiming the individual award but also for for his team in the quest to win La Liga.
"Cristiano is going to play both of the remaining games in the league.
"He's doing well, he looked good against City and it's important for him that he plays," said the manager.
Madrid look for vengeance against Valencia
Ronaldo's personal record against Valencia is impressive - he has nine goals in 12 games against the men from the Mestalla.
In recent history however, both Madrid's star and his team as a whole have struggled to dominate Los Che.
Around this time of year last season, it was Valencia who put an end to Real Madrid's title hopes with a 2-2 draw at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
A match that saw Ronaldo miss a penalty.
The last game between the two was also one to forget for both the club and player, Ronaldo once again failing to score in another 2-2 draw that cost Rafael Benitez his job.
Now, under the tutelage of Zidane, Ronaldo will be fighting as always for both personal and collective glory.
