Rafa Benitez will attract other players to Newcastle United – and, most importantly, players with Premier League quality.
And that’s even despite the Magpies’ relegation.
Previous managers didn’t have the control over who they wanted to sign, but Benitez will be able to convince players to follow him to the club.
It was absolutely vital that Benitez had it written into his contract that he will be in control of all football matters, and most importantly transfers.
Over the past few years, the recruitment policy hasn’t worked.
To get a winning team, it needed an overhaul and Benitez is the man who can lead that.
I think he will try to keep the majority of the squad who are there at the moment.
And I think a lot of them will be willing to stay.
There is talent there, I just think we need a little bit more experience among the bright young players we have.
He’s had a few months with the squad, he’s already looked at them – he knows exactly who he wants to keep, who he wants to move on, and where he needs to strengthen.
Moussa Sissoko and Georginio Wijnaldum will have one eye on leaving, but I think if anyone can convince them to stay then it is Rafa.
Most of the players will believe in a bright future and in Benitez turning them into even better players.
If Benitez comes and asks you to stay for a year in the Championship before hopefully competing for bigger and better things in the future, as a player you will certainly seriously contemplate it.
If the board were the ones to do that without Benitez there, then you’ll think twice before committing.
I think Benitez will go big this summer as well.
By that I mean he’ll target international players and players with Premier League quality, as well as a few with Championship experience too.
He’s looking to build for the future, so he wants to create a squad which is strong and is well stocked.
Benitez will make sure the next two years are vital in the rebuilding process, and to do that he needs to keep signing international players and improving the quality of the squad – regardless of the fact Newcastle are now outside the Premier League.
Big players will come to Newcastle as well because Rafa is probably the best one to sell the club to them.
That’s how crucial it is to have a manager of Rafa’s undoubted stature.
